80GB Added, 60GB Price Dropped $100

by J.W.

ps380box.jpg

Well, the long-standing rumor of an 80GB PS3 has finally become official as Sony, attempting to make a big Pre-E3 Splash, has announced that they will indeed be releasing an 80GB PS3 as. The console, which will have MotorStorm as a pack-in game, is expected for an August release.

In other news, the rumored “temporary” PS3 Price Drop has become permanent, dropping the PS3 price-tag to a slightly-more-affordable $499.

This makes the PS3 the first of the big three consoles to lower their price. I think I can speak for you, me, Magdalena, Tommy, Paco, Tim, Stuart, Alex, and the ever-mysterious “Staff Writer” when I say that I hope the other manufacturers follow suit with a price-drop.

Gamezone gives us Dark Sector Preview

by Magdalena Larsson

Nothing quite says a day at the ballpark like a good scary game …isn’t that right?

Gamezone have had the opportunity to look into one of the upcoming E3 games in a preview.
Developed by Digital Extremes, Dark Sector is one title that has been turning heads since it was announced a while back. The game’s nice looking aesthetic has only been trumped in discussion by the mystery surrounding its development.

The details on the game are still quite scarce, but from what Gamezone were told at a recent D3Publisher press event, Dark Sector follows the story of Hayden Tenno, a Jack Bauer-type from a CIA-like agency sent to Lazria to assassinate a rogue agent. However, once there, Hayden gets infected with Lazrian biological weaponry that causes metal to cover his skin (kind of like Dr. Doom in the Fantastic Four movies), granting him with unique abilities.

I give you two pictures, to know more you have to read gamezones preview here!

The Hidden Danger of Hogwarts

by Magdalena Larsson

You all know that there is a new harry Potter movie out and also a game …of course .A writer at Myarcadeplanet.com attempts to remedy this issue with The Hidden Danger of Hogwarts with a few humorous options.
harry_potter3_bild.jpg

And it’s not the evil wizards, dementors, or giant snakes you should fear, but the stairs.
“So what is this threat that proves greater, at least in the short term, then all other dangers Hogwarts School has to offer?

Simple. It’s the stairs, those moving magical stairs that would often swing across to connect to another floor and thereby adding a bit of added quirkiness to the magical school. However, in the game Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix, these seemingly whimsical stairs can be unexpectedly lethal. Friends who have played the game have told me that your characters can fall off the stairs once they start moving and plummet to their doom. Apparently there is no version of OSHA in the magical world.

Someone has to stand up for those Hogwarts students, who frankly have enough problems to deal with as it is, so we at MAP got our heads together and came together with several solutions to solve this fatal problem. “

PS3 Sells 50K Down Under

by J.W.

In case you haven’t heard, the PS3 is pretty darn popular in the land of the Kangaroo. More than once has the PS3 topped sales charts, repeatedly crushing my beloved Xbox 360 in recent weeks. Now it seems that, according to IGN, the PS3 has finally hit the 50,000 unit mark.

Now, the IGN article cites recent GfK figures which show that the Playstation 3 has, in fact, topped 50K. The interesting thing about the GfK report is the timing it took to hit 50K. While the Wii did it in three, and Xbox 360 in six weeks, the PS3 took a whole thirteen weeks to hit the 50,000 marker.

Console Tables

There are two very important things to note about this bit of news: The overall sales are influenced by the time of year it’s released — the PS3 was released this past March, while the Wii and 360 were both released down under in time for the 2006 holiday season. Also, we do not know if pre-orders are included in the weekly figures.

Secondly, the PS2 got off to a slow start and, last I heard, it did pretty well for itself.

PS3 version of MOH delayed

I am sad to announce that we will have to wait until November for the Playstation 3 version of Medal of Honor Airborne.

the game is super hyped and have a lot of rabid fans and it will be available August 24, 2007 in Europe and August 28, 2007 in North America for the Xbox 360 videogame system from Microsoft and Windows PC. To bad we have to wait for the Ps3 version.
Meanwhile you can get some comfort in this great video from the game…

Jack T to visit the shrink?

by Magdalena Larsson

I do not like when people don’t have better things to do than harrassing people and finally …someone understood that the so called lawyer Jack Thompson is a bit of a nutcase.
The Florida Bar is proposing that the “lawyer” submit to psychological testing and accept a 91-day suspect of his law license as part of a Florida Supreme Court mandated mediation, Game Politics reports.

Thompson copied Game Politics in an email with the Florida Supreme Court:

“Mediation failed today because there was no mediation whatsoever… Ms. Tuma not only did not move off her demand one iota, not one smidgeon, but she instead upped her demand by requiring that Thompson undergo a battery of psychological tests as part of the fabulous deal The Bar offered him…
Ms. Tuma last demand going into the mediation was a 91-day suspension, and she opened and ended with that and a shrink’s couch. This is bad faith…

This “mediation” was a charade… Finally, [Thompson] requests a status conference herein as soon as possible so that we can… shut this Star Chamber down. Thompson is not the one who needs a psych evaluation. “

It’s great that someone realized that something has to be done when a lawyer constantly harasses journalist, game developers and others. And if there is someone that need to be permanently disbarred from his lawyer-duties in my opinion its Jack Thompson.

Couldn’t help myself including this one from Penny Arcade … when I heard this news!

Pre-Order Warhawk Now!

by J.W.

warhawk.jpg

EBGames, right now, is taking pre-orders for the upcoming Battlefield-esque Warhawk. I wasn’t fortunate enough to get in on the Warhawk Beta (I think not owning a PS3 may be the reason), but the people I’ve spoken to about Warhawk have all said the same thing:

It’s freaking awesome!

Now, you may be wondering why you would want to pre-order your copy from EBGames. After all, you can just buy and download the game off the Playstation Store once it’s released this September, right? Well, you can. But you won’t be getting the extra features, such as the Behind-the-Scenes interviews, concept art, and that rather snazzy Bluetooth headset.

All pre-orders of Warhawk ship on August 28th, and it retails for the industry standard $59.99.

Sega sez… PS3 Price Too High!

by J.W.

files.jpg

Masanao Maeda, an executive over at Sega, has been quoted by Reuters as saying that the only way Sony will be able to stimulate low demand for the Playstation 3 is for a “significant” price cut.

“Name brand, price and software are what count,” Sega Corp. corporate director Masanao Maeda told Reuters in an interview on Monday. Sega Corp. is the game unit of Sega Sammy.

“Since it’s getting difficult to make software availability a differentiating factor, superior marketing and pricing strategy will be the key for Sony,” Maeda said.

The man has a point — Blu-Ray or not, the PS3 is a console that will bring pain upon your pocketbook. While I do tend to agree that a minor price cut is the way to go for the lagging console (from $600 to the $450-500 range), I also have to admit that there are some titles on the horizon for the PS3 that has me, the resident Xbox fanboy, excited.

Beautiful Katamari canned for PS3?

by J.W.

109352-1.jpg

According to IGN, it appears that Namco-Bandai has canned the PS3 version of their upcoming Beautiful Katamari.

Up until recently, the developer continued to work on both versions of the project. However, sources close to Namco Bandai tell IGN that the studio ran into some trouble with the port of the game to PlayStation 3 and these issues, coupled with the stalled sales of the system, have led to the project’s quiet cancellation. Looking to better-than-expected sales of Wii, the company has, say insiders, re-shifted resources to ready a Wii build of Beautiful Katamari instead. Given that the title cannot be ported from Xbox 360, the game is being re-concepted for Wii.

Now, to add to the confusion, Newsweek’s N’Gai Croal is reporting that Beautiful Katamari may, in fact, becomt an Xbox 360 exclusive.

A little birdie with good reason to know–and to gloat–informed us that the We Love Katamari sequel, Beautiful Katamari, would join the ranks of Xbox 360 exclusive titles… We’ve since confirmed that an exclusivity deal between Namco and Microsoft is very close to fruition, likely to be announced at the E3 Media and Business Summit in July. Namco is enjoying the warm embrace and ever-deepening ties with Microsoft, while Microsoft sees this as an opportunity to change the perception of Xbox 360 as the barracks for bald space marines and little else.

So, really, no one knows what the hell is happening with Beautiful Katamari. At best, all you can do is keep an eye on the developments, and hope for the best.
