Pachter: $499 entry-price here to stay

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

files.jpg

(I love that picture, for whatever reason)

When we heard that the 60 GBPS3 was having it’s price dropped to $499, we were all pretty stoked. Then it was learned that Sony was, in fact, phasing out the 60GB PS3, leaving the new 80GB model the only option at $599. So really, the price drop was temporary.

…now Michael Pachter is saying that we should expect the 80GB PS3 to drop down to $499.

We believe that there are presently 2-3 million 60GB PS3s produced and not yet sold, and expect the entire supply to be diverted to the US to honor the new lower price point.

Once these units are sold through, we expect the company to lower the price of its 80GB model to USD 499 on a standalone basis.

Pachter went on to cite the new software emulation as a potential production cost for Sony that could lead to another price drop sometime next year.

We expect the USD 499 price cut to be maintained until early next year, when the 80GB model will likely be cut again to USD 399.

…that’s just crazy talk…

Quake wars on E3 07

Monday, July 16th, 2007

One of the games I look forward to the most is the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars and Activision is bringing it to Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

In QUAKE Wars, you can choose to play as Earth’s Global Defense Force or alien Strogg, with five different classes in each. Your character will grow in experience as you complete missions and objectives.

What is so great about Quake Wars then? Well it is the only game that (in my opinion) have a slight chance to kick some Digital Illusion but and beat up the Battlefield franchise.
And now, since it’s made for all the platforms I expect some of you guys to let me kick you’re ass when the game hits the shelves…

Sony to phase out 60GB PS3

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

files.jpg

Yeah, remember how everyone was psyched for the price-drop regarding the 60GB PS3? Yeah, turns out Sony was only messing with our hearts.

In an interview with w Norwegian website, Kaz Harai himself is quoted as saying:

We’re no longer in production for [the 60GB PS3], so once that product is gone from the retailers shelves, then we’re back to the $599 SKU only, so it’s not like we have a two-price strategy here in the US market, which we found out very early on, that consumers react mostly to having one SKU as opposed to two.

…oh, Kaz… you guys sure know how to squander away ANY good publicity you get. You had a strong showing at E3, you were FINALLY getting the people on your side… and then you go and do this bullshit.

Piss.

New 80GB PS3 Takes BC Hit

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

ps3-backwards-compatibility-3.jpg

Are you wanting a PS3, but haven’t yet thrown down the cash to obtain one? Don’t feel bad — you’re not alone. Are you someone who owns a TON of PS-X and PS2 games, and plan on trading in your PS2 for cash towards the PS3? After all, if you have a PS3, which is fully Backward Compatible, why have the PS2?

Because the PS3 is soon to be not so good at playing your old games. The new 80GB will be ditching the “emotion chip” for a new software-based solution (think of how an Emulator works) that will cut back significantly on the number of classic PS-X and PS2 games you can play. Now, in time you’ll probably be able to play all your old games after a series of Firmware updates, but if you, like me, want instant gratification… get the 60GB.

80GB Added, 60GB Price Dropped $100

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

ps380box.jpg

Well, the long-standing rumor of an 80GB PS3 has finally become official as Sony, attempting to make a big Pre-E3 Splash, has announced that they will indeed be releasing an 80GB PS3 as. The console, which will have MotorStorm as a pack-in game, is expected for an August release.

In other news, the rumored “temporary” PS3 Price Drop has become permanent, dropping the PS3 price-tag to a slightly-more-affordable $499.

This makes the PS3 the first of the big three consoles to lower their price. I think I can speak for you, me, Magdalena, Tommy, Paco, Tim, Stuart, Alex, and the ever-mysterious “Staff Writer” when I say that I hope the other manufacturers follow suit with a price-drop.

Gamezone gives us Dark Sector Preview

Monday, July 9th, 2007

Nothing quite says a day at the ballpark like a good scary game …isn’t that right?

Gamezone have had the opportunity to look into one of the upcoming E3 games in a preview.
Developed by Digital Extremes, Dark Sector is one title that has been turning heads since it was announced a while back. The game’s nice looking aesthetic has only been trumped in discussion by the mystery surrounding its development.
s23430_ps3_28.jpg
The details on the game are still quite scarce, but from what Gamezone were told at a recent D3Publisher press event, Dark Sector follows the story of Hayden Tenno, a Jack Bauer-type from a CIA-like agency sent to Lazria to assassinate a rogue agent. However, once there, Hayden gets infected with Lazrian biological weaponry that causes metal to cover his skin (kind of like Dr. Doom in the Fantastic Four movies), granting him with unique abilities.

I give you two pictures, to know more you have to read gamezones preview here!

PS3 Sells 50K Down Under

Friday, July 6th, 2007

In case you haven’t heard, the PS3 is pretty darn popular in the land of the Kangaroo. More than once has the PS3 topped sales charts, repeatedly crushing my beloved Xbox 360 in recent weeks. Now it seems that, according to IGN, the PS3 has finally hit the 50,000 unit mark.

Now, the IGN article cites recent GfK figures which show that the Playstation 3 has, in fact, topped 50K. The interesting thing about the GfK report is the timing it took to hit 50K. While the Wii did it in three, and Xbox 360 in six weeks, the PS3 took a whole thirteen weeks to hit the 50,000 marker.

Console Tables

There are two very important things to note about this bit of news: The overall sales are influenced by the time of year it’s released — the PS3 was released this past March, while the Wii and 360 were both released down under in time for the 2006 holiday season. Also, we do not know if pre-orders are included in the weekly figures.

Secondly, the PS2 got off to a slow start and, last I heard, it did pretty well for itself.

PS3 version of MOH delayed

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

I am sad to announce that we will have to wait until November for the Playstation 3 version of Medal of Honor Airborne.

the game is super hyped and have a lot of rabid fans and it will be available August 24, 2007 in Europe and August 28, 2007 in North America for the Xbox 360 videogame system from Microsoft and Windows PC. To bad we have to wait for the Ps3 version.
Meanwhile you can get some comfort in this great video from the game…

Sega sez… PS3 Price Too High!

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

files.jpg

Masanao Maeda, an executive over at Sega, has been quoted by Reuters as saying that the only way Sony will be able to stimulate low demand for the Playstation 3 is for a “significant” price cut.

“Name brand, price and software are what count,” Sega Corp. corporate director Masanao Maeda told Reuters in an interview on Monday. Sega Corp. is the game unit of Sega Sammy.

“Since it’s getting difficult to make software availability a differentiating factor, superior marketing and pricing strategy will be the key for Sony,” Maeda said.

The man has a point — Blu-Ray or not, the PS3 is a console that will bring pain upon your pocketbook. While I do tend to agree that a minor price cut is the way to go for the lagging console (from $600 to the $450-500 range), I also have to admit that there are some titles on the horizon for the PS3 that has me, the resident Xbox fanboy, excited.
